I am a Storyteller (1998~2006)

Poetic objects and spaces of inward memory

I like to transform ordinary objects into non-ordinary objects, especially poetic objects. For it I mainly use the technique of collection and transformation. The objects that were worn and damaged and discarded were rescued from being left out and abandoned.  And they experience healing, recovery, and rebirth. Then they own a new identity as a poetic object that triggers storytelling, instead of the identity that the functional purpose was mainly about. From an object's point of view, it's like the life that they thought was over is being ' reborn ' to a whole new dimension.

My favorite places are room, drawers, box, bag, and books. These are different sizes and have different characteristics in how they are used. However, it is similar in that it has an open and closed structure. Typically, stories have open and closed structure. Reading or watching a story can be interpreted as a kind of spatial experience, opening the door of a world, having a wide range of experiences, and then closing the door.

I hinge two drawers, which turns to the bag having overlapped images of boxes and drawers. And I put objects in it.

The objects in the box act as a poetic trigger leading up to the storytelling, and remind the viewer of the inner memories and the imaginations that were asleep.
My favorite form of poetic objet is definitely clothing. Clothes by themselves metaphor a person's presence. Clothes that become objects of poetry during deliberate transformation tend to lead the story naturally, creating a feeling of familiarity and strange, provoking the viewer's imagination.
