기억의 방: 윤동주 시인을 오마주하며, 부산비엔날레, 부산진역, 2012

​

작품이 설치된 공간은 과거 부산진역 역사의 장표창고로 쓰이던 작은 방으로, 부산진역을 오고 간 사람들, 물품들이 문서의 형태로 보관되어졌던 공간이었습니다. 저는 이 작은 방이 어떤 의미에서 부산진역의 기억을 보관하던 공간으로서, 부산진역이라는 공간의 집합체 가운데 기억이 가장 농축되어진 공간이라는 생각이 들었습니다. 가로 세로 3m, 높이 2.5m인 독특한 크기의 작은 방은 현실적 공간이라기보다는 심리적인 공간, 특별히 "기억의 방"이라는 시적 공간(poetic space)으로 경험되기에 용이해 보였습니다. 

 

부산진역이 준공되고 여행자의 기억들이 활발히 담겨졌던 시기는 일제 강점기로서, 이 작은 방에 담겨진 기억들은 아픔과 상처들이 대부분을 차지하고 있을 것이었습니다. 저는 공간이 가진 특성과 일제 식민의 아픈 기억들에 기초하여, 시대의 아픔을 존재 안에 담은 채 여행하는 여행자를 시적 오브제(poetic object)들을 사용하여 표현하고 그것을 "기억의 방" 안에 설치하고자 했습니다. 

 그 과정에서 "기억의 방"의 주인공으로 자리하게 된 이가 윤동주 시인이었습니다. 그는 일본 유학 중 독립운동 사상범으로 체포되어 1945년 2월, 일본 후쿠오카의 차가운 감옥에서 사망합니다. 체포되던 날은 신변의 위험을 느껴 이미 가방을 고향으로 부치고 차표까지 사 놓은 상태였다고 합니다. 

 

시인의 옷은 “참다운 시인은 본능적으로 괴로워하면서 자신을 태우고 다른 사람들까지 태워버린다”라고 한 러시아의 문호 톨스토이의 고백으로부터 영감을 받은 작품입니다. 가슴부분에 인두로 태워 표현한 불꽃은 이제 곧 옷 전체가 불타게 될 것을 암시합니다. 이는 시인의 심장에 자리한 고뇌와 열정이 그의 삶을 전부 불태우게 된다는 것을 암시합니다. 

시인의 여행가방 안에는 <별 헤는 밤>의 일부를 수놓았습니다. 가방 안에 담긴 흙은 그가 <별 헤는 밤>에서 자신의 이름을 부른 후 부끄러워 흙으로 덮어버렸다고 한 그 고향의 밤 언덕을 은유합니다. 그래서 흙위에 올려놓은 작은 보석은 그의 이름, 즉 시인의 별을 은유합니다.

불로 태운 사진들 속에는 타들어가는 시인의 손과 발의 모습이 담겨있습니다. 벽, 바닥에는 불에 그을려진 흔적들이 있고, 곳곳에 시의 구절들이 새겨져 있습니다.

기억의 방 전체가 시인의 옷 처럼 자신의 삶을 모두 불태우고 우리의 기억 속에 아픔과 그리움으로 자리하게 된 윤동주 시인, 그의 존재와 그의 삶을 상징합니다.

 

Room of Memory : Homage to poet Yoon Dong-ju, Busan Biennale, Busanjin Station, 2012 ​

The room in which the work was installed was a small room used as a storage area for Busanjin station. It was the place where records and items of people who came to Busanjin Station were kept. This small room looked like the place where the memories of Busanjin station were kept in a sense. I thought this was the most enriched place among the clusters of spaces called Busanjin station. A small room measuring 3 meters by 2.5 meters in height seemed more of a psychological space than a real one.  This space looked especially easy to experience as a poetic space called " Room of Memory."

This space had been primarily used during the Japanese occupation period. The memories in this small room would be mostly of pain and suffering. I started with the character of this space and the painful memories in Japanese colonization period. And I expressed a traveler traveling with the pain of the times in his heart using poetic objects. And I wanted to put it in a "Room of Memory." 

In the process, it was poet Yun Dong-ju who became the main character of " Room of Memory. " He was arrested as an independence activist while studying in Japan, and died in a cold prison in Fukuoka, Japan in February 1945. The day he was arrested, he felt danger, so he had already shipped his bags to his hometown and even bought a ticket.

The clothe of a poet was inspired by Russian author Tolstoy who said  " The real poet is instinctively distressed, burning himself and burning others. " 
A burning flame in the breast indicates that the entire outfit is about to burn. This suggests that the anguish and passion that cherished poet's heart will burn his whole life.

InsideThe Poet's Suitcase, I embroidered the text of his poem <Night of the Stars>, the dirt in the bag is the metaphor for the home town hill that he called his name and covered it with the dirt in shame. So the little gem on the dirt metaphor his name, the poet's star. In the pictures are images of the burning poet's hands and feet. Walls, floors are covered with burned marks and verses from the poem are inscribed. The room itself symbolizes the existence of the poet Yoon Dong ju and his life, who has burned his whole life.  He lives in our heart with pain and longing.
