내가 엉겅퀴강물이 되어 당신 앞으로 갈게요  

I Will become a Thistly River, and Flows to You

엉겅퀴는 조선과 중국의 들에 피는 생명력이 강한 꽃으로, 거친 줄기와 잎파리를 가졌습니다. 하지만 빻아서 상처에 덧대면 피를 응고시켜 민간 치료제로도 쓰이는 치유의 꽃이기도 합니다. 고향에 돌아가고 싶어 애타게 뻗은 두 손에서 고통과 그리움의 엉겅퀴가 자라납니다. 손은 엉겅퀴 가시에 찔려 상처투성이가 되었습니다. 엉겅퀴는 선명한 핏빛의 붉은 꽃을 피우며 강물이 되어 흘러갑니다. 그리고 국경 너머 그리운 이에게로 처연히 흘러갑니다. 

[작업노트] 한땀 한땀 느리게 진행되는 자수기법이 이 작품에 특별한 의미를 부여해 주었습니다. 그리움의 강물은 그 힘이 강해서 새차게 흘러가고 싶어하지만, 하루하루 더디게 흘러가는 고통의 시간이 그것을 막아섭니다. 바늘을 쥔 저의 손끝으로 그런 그리움의 속도와 힘이 만져지는 것 같았습니다. 저는 그 속도를 막아서는 시간의 느림에 압도되지 않기 위하여 호흡을 가다듬고 또 가다듬어야 했습니다. 

 

민들레꽃할머니   A Dandelion Grandma

민들레 꽃 할머니는 혹독한 역사의 시간들을 견뎌내듯 살아낸 강렬하고 아름다운 존재를 상징합니다. 그녀는 강제로 이주되어 돌아오지 못하고 있는 나그네, 즉 디아스포라 가운데서도 “일본군 위안부”라는 가장 고통스러운 상황에 내몰렸던 존재입니다. 그녀는 난폭하게 뜯겨져 먼 타향으로 옮겨 심겨졌습니다. 그리고 종전 후에도 한국의 가부장적 문화 속에서 수치스런 존재로 치부되어 숨겨지거나 잊혀져왔습니다. 

하지만 이제 그녀의 존재가 거대한 욕망의 도시에 거주하는 우리들을 흔들어 놓고, 안온한 우리의 삶이 부끄러워지도록 만듭니다. 그리고 그런 부끄러움과 마음앓이가 우리를 진정으로 살리고 회복시킵니다. 그녀의 얼굴을 대면하는 경험이 우리 안에 잠들어 있던 ‘진실의 얼굴’을 깨워내기 때문입니다.

[작업노트] 인두로 태우는 기법을 사용하여 위안부 할머니의 주름진 얼굴을 표현한 후, 빛이 인두자국들을 통과하도록 설치하였습니다. 고통의 시간이 남긴 얼굴의 주름들과 그녀의 가슴에서 자라난 민들레 홀씨들이 아름다운 빛의 흔적으로 변화됩니다. 빛의 씨앗들은 생명의 씨앗이 되어 멀리멀리 퍼져나갑니다. 그것은 생명의 존엄함을 일깨우고 다음 세대까지 전달되어 소중한 가치들을 꽃 피워낼 것입니다.

가슴울새소녀

A Girl with a Bloodstained breast Bird  

영원히 멈추지 않을 듯한 눈물을 흘리며 소녀가 서 있습니다. 그녀의 움켜쥔 주먹 위로 가슴울새가 앉아 있습니다. 새는 소녀를 지키며 고통을 함께하는 친구이자 소녀 자신이기도 합니다. 예쁜 새의 모습은 흰 천에 인두로 태워 그린 소녀의 처연한 모습과 대조를 이룹니다. 하지만 새도 눈물을 흘리고 있으며 소녀가 흘린 눈물방울에 조금씩 몸이 타들어가고 있습니다. 우리 민족은 새가 노래한다고 말하기보다 새가 운다고 말합니다. 저는 그것을 피멍이 든 붉은 가슴에서 노래가 퍼져나가는 모습으로 표현하였습니다. 그 노래는 하늘로 올라가 반짝이는 별이 됩니다. 

[작업노트] 민들레꽃할머니와 가슴울새소녀의 모델이 되었던 분은 노래부르는 것을 좋아해 가수가 꿈이셨던 길원옥 할머니입니다. 평양에서 태어나신 할머니는 13세에 "일본군 위안부"로 하얼빈에 끌려가 고초를 당하셨습니다. "쓸쓸할 때 혼자 있으면, 노래부르는게 일이었어요. 노래가 내 친구라고 할까요. 노래를 부르면 힘들고 어두운 일은 잊게 되거든요." 할머니는 2004년부터 국내외를 다니며 "일본군 위안부" 문제를 알리고 평화를 위한 인권활동가로 활약하고 계십니다. 그리고 2017년에 <길원옥의 평화> 음반을 발표하시면서 90세에 가수의 꿈을 이루셨습니다.

대면(퍼포먼스)  Face to  Face​ 

민들레꽃할머니는 기억 속으로 여행을 떠나고, 과거의 그녀 자신인 가슴울새소녀를 다시 만나게 됩니다. 그들은 서로의 얼굴을 쓰다듬고 눈물을 닦아줍니다.  그리고 손을 잡고 기억 속의 고향, 그리움의 들판으로 돌아가 아름다운 춤을 춥니다.

I Will become a Thistly River, and Flows to You

Thistle is a flower found in Korean and Chinese fields, and has rough stems and leaves. However, it is also a healing flower that coagulates blood and serves as a folk remedy when it is attached to a wound. The thistles of pain and longing grows in her hands. Her hands is covered in wounds from being pricked by thorns. Thistle flowers bloom and turn into rivers. And the river flows across the border to her beloved one.

[Note] Slow embroidery techniques granted a special meaning to this work. The river of longing is so powerful that it wants to flow quickly, but the slow passage of painful times blocks it. With the needle in my hand, I could feel the tensions between.  I had to control my breath in order not to be overwhelmed by the slowness of time.

A Dandelion Grandma

A Dandelion Grandma symbolizes the powerful and beautiful being who has lived through the harsh times in Korean history. She was driven into the painful existence, called " Comfort Woman"- Japanese military sexual slavery.  I think which is the most severe one in the Korean  Diaspora's history. She was violently ripped and moved to a faraway land. And even after the end of the war, she has been regarded as a shameful existence in the patriarchal culture of Korea, either hidden or forgotten.

[Note] I expressed the Grandma's wrinkled face using my burning technique. I installed the work so that light would pass through the burn marks. The wrinkles on her face and dandelion spores that grew in her breast are turned into beautiful marks of lights. The seeds of light becomes the seeds of life and spread far and wide. It will spread to the next generation and enlightens the dignity of life.

A Girl with a Bloodstained breast Bird

The girl is standing there with tears in her eyes that seem to last forever. There is a bird sitting on her fist. The bird is her friend who shares pains and protects her . The bird is herself. The pretty look of the bird is in contrast to the girl's sorrowful appearance. But the bird is shedding tears as well and slowly being burned by the tears that the girl shed. Korean people say birds are crying rather than birds are singing. So I expressed that as a song spread out from the blood stained breast of the bird. The song goes up to the sky and becomes shining stars.

[Note] The model of these works-A Dandelion Grandma and A Girl with a Bloodstained breast Bird- was Kil Won Ok, who had a dream to be a singer because she loved singing. She was born in Pyongyang. She was taken to Harbin at the age of 13.  She had the hardships as a  "Comfort Women" at there. She said " Whenever I felt lonely, I sang. Singing is my friend." She has been fighting for peace since 2004. And she released the album  <Peace of Gil Won-ok> in 2017. By doing this, she achieved her dream at the age of 90.

Face to Face -performance

Dandelion Grandma goes travel into her memory. And she reencounters her old self, the girl with a bird. They caress each other's faces and wipe their tears. They join hands and go back to "the field of longing", where their hometown is, and they dance beautifully.
