헐벗은 얼굴의 부름과 응답
엠마누엘 레비나스(Emmauel Levinas)는 타자의 얼굴은 텅빈 얼굴로 온다고 말합니다. 텅빈 얼굴이란 고아나 과부의 얼굴처럼 사회에서 모든 의미를 박탈당한 얼굴을 말하는데, 바로 그런 얼굴이 우리의 모든 지식이 무색해지는 텅빔으로 다가온다는 것입니다. 그리고 그런 얼굴은 우리의 일상에 상처를 내면서 우리 안에 감춰져 있던 결핍이 드러나도록 만듭니다. 그런 얼굴은 우리의 마음에 수치와 부끄러움을 불러일으키고 인간실존의 진실에 대해 돌아보게 만듭니다. 그래서 그런 얼굴과의 대면은 끔찍할 정도로 고통스러운 경험이 될 수 있습니다. 그러나 그런 경험이 우리의 영혼에 변화를 불러일으키고 진실한 삶에로의 회복을 가능하게 합니다.
'헐벗음'이란 'unveiled', 즉 겹겹으로 쓰고 있던 베일들, 가면들을 벗어버림을 의미합니다. 우리는 사회가, 혹은 스스로가 씌운 베일들을 하나 둘 벗어버리고 진실한 얼굴을 회복하는 여정을 계속해 나가야 합니다.
2014년 4월 16일에 발생한 세월호 사건은 우리의 일상에 상처를 내면서 한국 사회의 심각한 결핍이 드러나도록 만들었습니다. 바다를 바라보며 울부짖는 유가족들의 얼굴은 저에게 모든 의미를 박탈당한 텅빈 얼굴로 다가왔습니다. 그들의 헐벗은 얼굴이 저의 얼굴을 깨우면서 저의 영혼과 삶에 큰 변화를 일으켰습니다. Unveiled Face 연작은 그런 자전적 스토리를 담아 시적 오브제로서의 얼굴들을 제작하고 그것을 공간설치와 퍼포먼스로 풀어나간 작품입니다.
얼굴들은 고통으로 깨어졌거나 상흔이 새겨진 모습으로 눈물을 흘리고 있습니다. 얼굴에 상흔처럼 박혀있는 장미꽃잎은 고통 없이는 품어낼 수 없는 생명과 사랑을 상징합니다. 장미상흔이 새겨진 소라는 바다에서 돌아오지 못한채 그리움이 되어버린 희생자들의 영혼을 상징합니다.

The call and response of the unveiled face
Emmanuel Levinas says other people's faces come as the empty faces. Empty face means the face of an orphan or a widow, deprived of all meaning in society. And that's the face that makes all our knowledge meaningless. And that kind of face hurts our daily lives and reveals the hidden deficiencies in us. Such a face shames our mind and makes us look back on the truth of human existence. So facing a face like that can be a horribly painful experience. But that experience can make a difference in our souls and enable us to make a return to our true lives.
"Unveiled" means taking off the veils, masks that were written on your face. We must continue our journey to take off the veils that society has put on us and restore our true faces.The Sewol disaster on April 16, 2014, hurt our daily lives, revealing a serious lack of Korean society.
The crying faces of the bereaved families came to me as the empty faces devoid of all meaning. Their unveiled faces awakened my face, and changed my soul and my life deeply. Unveiled Face Series is the work of creating faces as a poetic object, putting them in space, adding performances.
The faces have been broken or scarred with pain. They are shedding tears. The rose petals that stick to the face like scars represent life and love that can not be cherished without pain. Sea shell, with a rose scar, stands for the souls of victims. Sea Shell became the longing for all of us.
