물질적 상상력과 불의 이미지

​

이미지의 현상학자 가스통 바슐라르(Gauston Bachelard)는 불, 공기, 물, 흙과 같은 근원적인 물질들이 만들어내는 이미지를 물질적 이미지라 부르고, 그것이 불러일으키는 상상력을 물질적 상상력이라고 부릅니다. 그리고 그것은 시간과 문화를 초월하는 보편성을 갖는다고 보았습니다. 

Burning Sacrifice 연작은 불의 물질적 이미지와 그것이 불러일으키는 물질적 상상력을 사용한 작품들입니다. 저는 타오르며 소멸시키는 불의 물질성에 작업과정을 최대한 내어주면서, 불의 물질성이 불러일으키는 물질적 상상력에 기대어 치명적이고 강렬한 번제의 이미지를 표현하고자 했습니다. 

불은 사진 속 인물과 꽃을 태워 변형시키고 검은 그을음 자국들을 남겨놓습니다. 불은 고통과 소멸, 그리고 죽음의 이미지를 불러일으킵니다. 그러나 동시에 소중한 가치를 지켜내고자 자신의 생명을 던져 희생하는 숭고한 순교의 이미지를 불러일으키기도 합니다. 불은 아름답고 흠이 없는 상태를 파괴하고 돌이킬 수 없는 상흔들을 남깁니다. 하지만 화염과 같은 고통을 통과한 후 도달하게 되는 처연한 아름다움을 발생시키기도 합니다. 그리고 숭고한 희생을 통해 얻게 되는 치유과 구원에 대해 묵상하도록 이끕니다.

불엔 탄 옷은 순교자의 삶을 환유합니다. 특별히 옷의 심장부분에 자리하는 불꽃의 이미지는 불꽃이 불러일으키는 물질적 상상력에 의해 비장한 순교의 스토리텔링을 발생시킵니다. 우리는 순교자의 심장에서 시작된 뜨거운 불꽃이 결국 그의 삶 전체를 불태우게 되리라는 상상을 하게 되는 것입니다. 또한 옷 전체로 확산된 거친 그을음 자국들은 불꽃이 이미 거대한 불로 확장되었음을 암시합니다.

Material imagination and image of fire

Image phenomenologist Gaston Bachelard called material images that are produced by the fundamental materials, such as fire, air, water and soil. And the imagination that it raises is called material imagination. And he said they have a universality that transcends time and culture. Burning sacrifice is the series of works that use fire's material image and the material imagination it creates. For this series, I've relied on the material nature of fire for the entire art working process. And I wanted to project an image of a fatal and powerful burnt offering, based on the material imagination that the fire was creating.

Fire transforms the people and flowers in the pictures. And it leaves the trail of burns. Fire generates images of pain, decimation, and death. But at the same time, it also raises the image of a sublime martyrdom that sacrifices to preserve precious values. Fire destroys its beautiful, flawless condition and leaves behind irreparable scars. But it also produces a "broken beauty" that reaches after passing through flame-like suffering. And it leads us to meditate on the healing and redemption that comes from nobles acrifices.

Burnt clothes symbolize the life of martyr. Image of flame located at the heart of a garment create a story telling of martyrdom driven by the material imagination that flame generate. We imagine that the hot flame that started at the heart of the martyr would eventually burn his whole life. Trail of burnt throughout the cloth indicate that the flames have already extended to huge fires.
